A day in the life of a Support Worker
People often ask what the job is really like. For me, it’s about giving young people a safe, steady day. Simple things matter like clean clothes, warm meals, school, hobbies, and someone who listens. I try to make every morning calm and clear, even when a young person wakes up worried or unsure about the day ahead.
I help them pick an outfit, chat over breakfast, remind them of what they’re good at, and keep the mood light. Sometimes that means singing badly to their music in the car, or talking about who would win in a superhero fight. Other times it means staying patient when they’re upset, or when a small thing turns into a big wobble.
In between school runs, I tidy rooms, sort washing, plan meals, and look for new activities in the area that might help build their confidence and independence. By the end of the day, I’ve been a helper, a guide, a calm voice, and sometimes the person who makes them laugh. It’s never predictable, but it’s always worth it.
